When stretching, a break in the individual fibers of the ligament apparatus is observed. Its main symptoms are pain and swelling, limiting the mobility of the joint. In more severe cases, hemorrhage occurs in nearby tissues (sometimes into the joint cavity).
The acute period with this type of injury lasts 3-5 days, then the pain gradually begins to subside, but it is usually felt for 2-3 more weeks. At this time, usually there is limited movement in the joint. To ease the pain and accelerate recovery, it is important to begin treatment in a timely manner.
First of all, the injured hand must be immobilized. To do this, it must be applied a tight bandage, using a wide bandage, normal or elastic (in severe cases, usually impregnated with gypsum). The patient should ensure complete rest. It is also advisable to apply cold to the damaged joint (in case there are bruises, this must be done!). After 3-5 days, when the acute period is over, you can begin treatment with heat: baths, warming compresses; physiotherapy (electrophoresis, UHF, paraffin therapy) are also shown. With severe pain, the doctor can recommend anti-inflammatory drugs in the form of injections or tablets.
A good result in the treatment of sprain is the local use of nonsteroidal inflammatory drugs – special ointments and gels (for example,”Efkamona”). They are rubbed into the skin around the affected joint 3-4 times a day, a dry warming bandage is applied from above. These funds not only help to relieve inflammation, but also significantly reduce pain. The duration of treatment depends on the degree of extension.
Traditional medicine for the treatment of sprains advises the use of certain plants: tansy, wormwood, onion. Grated wormwood leaves or grated on a shallow onion are applied to the affected area and wound with a bandage. The compress should be removed after a couple of hours, you can repeat the procedure the next day. From the flowers of tansy, infusion (3 tablespoons per 1 cup of boiling water) is prepared, which is used as poultices. These simple tools can bring relief to the patient, but do not neglect and treat recommended by doctors.
After recovery, protect your arm from physical exertion for at least a few weeks.
