In his book”The Bible of a cautious buyer,” Dr. Samuel Epstein, a professor at the Center for Environmental Medicine, writes that at least 884 toxic substances are used in the cosmetic industry. Often the components of cosmetics are petrochemical products. Here are some of the most common.
Sodium lauryl sulfate
This is the sodium salt of lauryl sulfonic acid, the cleaning agent that is found in most cosmetics. With long-term use of such drugs, it accumulates in the epidermal cells, as a result, the process of forming a protective skin barrier is disrupted. This can be expressed in peeling, dry skin, dermatitis and the appearance of comedones. The substance is also capable of disturbing the structure of the hair follicles and thereby contributing to hair loss.
Laureth sulfate of sodium
A softer product used in the manufacture of toothpaste, shampoos, shower gels and other foam forming agents. It dries the skin, so you need to wash it off well. By reacting with other ingredients, it can form dioxanes and carcinogens of nitrates that penetrate the blood and increase the likelihood of malignant tumors. In a large concentration causes skin and eye irritation. As part of the shampoo, laureth sulfate sodium is washed from the hair, not only dirt, but also fatty protective barrier. As a result, the hair is greased and requires more frequent washing.
A common preservative and antiseptic – it can cause an allergic reaction to the skin. If you apply the cream with methylparaben in the composition and stay for a while in the bright sun, it will cause increased damage to the cells and the formation of wrinkles. In general, any parabens have a weak estrogenic effect, but in combination with the effect of household chemicals, this can lead to hormonal imbalance.
It is often positioned as a useful moisturizing ingredient. However, its use is fraught with dry skin – with low humidity, it sucks water from the skin and keeps it on the surface.
The oil product is used in cosmetics as a moisturizer. Forming a film on the skin, prevents water exchange, carbon dioxide release and oxygen penetration. May cause premature skin aging, allergies, rashes.
This is a dihydric alcohol used in industry as an antifreeze, in cosmetics – for moisturizing. Replaces water in the skin cells, creating a deceptive effect of smoothness and hydration. The result – acne, irritation, dermatitis. With a large accumulation in the body causes disruption of the kidneys and liver.
This is only a small part of the components, often added to cosmetics, in the list of many emulsifiers, preservatives, fragrances, etc. It is not necessary to panic, having found out any of the listed substances in tubes on the shelf. As a rule, their percentage in the composition is not so great that they are clearly harmful. But, of course, the effect can accumulate over time.
Among the ingredients there are useful, neutral, as well as carcinogenic (triclosan) and hidden carcinogens. The latter are safe in themselves, but become harmful in chemical reactions or in decay. It should also be aware that often the funds in reality do not carry the benefits that are advertised, are useless in terms of health and long-term beauty. Therefore, it is worth more carefully and responsibly approach to the selection of care products.
